Orthopaedic Institute Galeazzi is the highest volume provider of orthopaedic procedures in Italy and a credited scientific and research center in orthopaedics and traumatology.

The Department of Bone and Joint Infections and Reconstructive Surgery has a specialized team, that includes orthopaedic surgeons, infectivologist, plastic surgeons.

The Laboratory of Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology has performed approximately 750,000 tests in 2011. The section of Microbiology runs approximately 30,000 examinations per year. One third of the total analyses are represented by microbiological tests for diagnosis of prosthetic infections. In this context, particular emphasis assumes the execution of microbiological analysis of prostheses by using  sonication and / or pretreatment with dithiothreitol (DTT), according to a protocol developed and validated in our laboratory.

The laboratory of Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology works in close relationship with Dept. of Bone and Joint Infections. Together the two departments have been awarded last year at the annual Congress of the European Bone and Joint Infection Society for the best research. Both the departments are involved in 3 research commitments: two of them funded by the Italian Ministry of Health and the third funded by the Lombardia Region.
